Discoveries

In 1865 Discoveries were published in eleven volumes. In this way the scholar wanted to pass over the critics who said his Bulletin was too full of Arborea papers.

His Discoveries wanted to give more detail to every monument and news linking them directly to reality. In fact, in that period there were many amateur archaeologists or grave robbers directed by Spano, people who worked on the field and reported him any destruction, sack and devastation. On this purpose, an example is given by the behaviour of Torralba mayor, who had had nuraghe St. Antine last floor demolished (this was a famous nuraghe, visited by Carlo Alberto), in order to use its stones to build a drinking-trough for cattle.

The discoveries he made are many. Among them, are worth to be named the Threelanguages from Saint Nicolò Gerrei, a basis with an inscription in three languages (Latin, Greek and Phoenician; in the Latin one it is remembered that it was given by the proprietor of Karales salt-works to the shrine of Esculapio) now kept in the Museum of Turin, and the Table of Esterzili, a large metal plaque which contains the text of a sentence spoken by Sardinian governor in 69 b. C., which forced the local Galilenses shepherds in the area of Esterzili to give their land to the farmers coming from Campania. It is a very important document because let us know about the disagreement between the immigrants (farmers) and the local people (shepherds). A quarrel between different minded peoples, a nomadic or half-nomadic one and the other sedentary.
