Church of Saint Mathew

The church of Saint Mathew, built before 1649, as can be read on the parish administration registers, is set at a short distance from the slope of the little volcanic hill which gives it its name, mount Saint Mathew, in the area named su Chirriu de Santu Matteu[i]. It has a single nave, a main altar and no sacristy, and is very small.
The church is quoted very little in documents. The only information are about 1653, quoted in the will of M. Angela Sini (Spanedda, 1989), in 1888, remembered by Archbishop Morillo because of its bad conditions and almost in ruins (Spanedda, 1989) and in 1706, when monsignor Giuseppe Siccardo, during his pastoral visit, ordered its restoring (Spanedda, 1989). The building, in the first half of XVII century was still not consecrated (Angius, 1847). In 1884 Archbishop monsignor Marongio found the church in good conditions and properly clean (Spanedda, 1989). The little church of Saint Mathew, now in ruins, still keeps the old bell that was in the one of Saint Antimo and later in the church of Madonna of Valverde. The statue of Saint Mathew, instead, is inside the Chapel of the Graces in the church of Saint Peter.
On the stones of the little veil-shaped belfry is carved a date: 1916, in memory of its restoring.
